Song #12 Drunken Pirates
In this scene we see Kyle in his office late at night working on his latest novel. The only light on in the house is his desk lamp, the rest of the house is totally dark.
One of the storylines that he's working on involves the ghosts of pirates lost at sea, haunting the seven seas. He's very pleased with the potential of the concept and he's now deep into his creative writing mode, hovering over his typewriter with tunnel vision. This is not uncommon for him...once he gets an idea he tends to pour himself into it, some would say obsessively. A bottle of wine and smoke rising from an ashtray sit next to his typewriter on his desk.
We hear him thinking out loud, as he often does when he gets on a writing roll. It sounds like a pretty scary story complete with drunken pirates falling off their ships and rising out of the ocean to haunt the seas forever. Spooky stuff. As he types and talks to himself the story gets spookier and spookier. We hear a guitar and harmonica start to play. His talking becomes singing...
This is a fantasy scene. As Kyle starts singing the song the lights slowly come up downstairs in the living room...but it's not the living room anymore. The lower level of the house has transformed into a pirate ship at sea with several pirates on board drinking, partying and generally being rowdy pirates. One of them is playing a guitar and another is playing the harmonica. Once in a while during the song we see a pirate fall overboard in a drunken stupor, only to then see his ghost rise up out of the ocean and fly up into the sky (I'll leave it to the expert special effects department to dazzle the audience with this scene).
Early on in the song Kyle gets up and walks out onto the balcony overlooking the living room/pirate ship, and Monica comes out of the bedroom to join him in singing. They sing as they look down on this incredible fantasy scene, accompanied by the two pirates on guitar and harmonica, while all of the pirates echo the haunting call in the song...

Lyrics

You still can hear them when the breeze is right
Ships that sailed on a pirates night
The Buccaneer in the crows nest calls
Cuz it looks like there's booty in sight
Listen closer and you'll hear their song
Of seven seas where the nights are long
Up on the galley, whiskey under the stars
And they all start singing along
And they were singing
Ridiley-I-Umbye (Ridiley-I-Umbye)
Ridiley-I-A (Ridiley-I-A)
Ridiley-I-Umbye-I-A
Ridiley-I-Umbye-I-A
Around the gangway they were feeling no pain
Rum and whiskey was the name of their game
Raise your glasses Matey, fore and aft
And roll out another barrel again
Drunken pirates falling off the bow
Jacobs Ladder won't save them now
And here we are still to this day
Hearing them in the breeze
They're singing...
Ridiley-I-Umbye (Ridiley-I-Umbye)
Ridiley-I-A (Ridiley-I-A)
Ridiley-I-Umbye-I-A
Ridiley-I-Umbye-I-A
