Song #11 You Never Hear A Word
When Will returns from his runaway weekend his parents are, as expected, quite upset with him. After a loud, heated discussion with his father on the front porch, Will retreats to his bedroom.
This following scene takes place outside in front of the house. When the lights are on we can see inside Will's room from the outside. Kyle is sitting on the front porch swing and Will is upstairs in his bedroom. It's dark outside and once again the night sky is full of stars. The porch lighting is dimmed as the lights in Will's room come up showing him sitting on the side of his bed gazing out the window. He starts singing to himself...

Lyrics

I know that you're only trying to show me
When do we question it all, when do we try to obey
But when you're a kid it all moves so slowly
And it seems like we really get nowhere by the end of the day
Why aren't you hearing what I say over and over
Could it be that all you see is yesterday
And the feeling all around gets colder and colder
And you never hear a word I ever say
(The lights in Will's room dim and the porch lighting goes up. Kyle sings the next verse...)
My son you've got to know I love you
And it's with this love I try to show the way
I'd gladly give the stars above you
For you to know the love we share is here to stay
But why aren't you hearing what I say over and over
Could it be that all you hear gets in the way
And the feeling all around gets colder and colder
And you never hear I word I ever say
(The lighting in Will's room comes back up and they both sing the last line together...)
And I never hear a word you ever say
(Monica comes out and says it's getting late, it's been a long day, why don't they go to bed...she takes his hand and leads him inside...)
